Profile

Imad graduated in Civil Engineering at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. The main focus of his final year project was behaviour of slender concrete columns with PVC external confinement. He did a research internship at PEER Berkeley, regarding earthquake signal processing. He finished his MSc in Earthquake Engineering from Imperial College of London in 2015. Directly after joined the University of Sheffield for a PhD. (Topic to be updated).

Recent activities and achievements

Project title: Seismic Behaviour of Rubber Concrete Beam-column Connections

Objectives:

  1. Behaviour of RC frames with Plastic Hinge Locations replaced with rubber concrete
  2. Comparison of replacing the material (ie replacing RC with CRC) against adjusting the geometry of the cross section to get the optimum curvature.
  3. Detailing of reinforcement at the plastic hinge to optimize rotation ability.

Tasks & Methodologies:

  1. Numerical Work: Modelling of the frame with plastic hinges locations replaced with crumb rubber concrete (CRC). As well as modelling of changes in geometry of the cross section. Parametric study regarding the detailing inside the connection and plastic hinge zone. Both ABAQUS & OpenSEES will be used as FEA tools for the analysis.
  2. Experimental Work: A shake table test will be done in Iasa, Romania, and it will act as a comparison to calibrate our models. Further planning is underway to experiment on full scale beam column joints for experimental results to mirror the numerical work described above. 

Expected results:

The purpose of Anagennisi project is to provide a use for crumb rubber concrete, and with promising results, this project can recommend design and construction guidelines for RC buildings in developing countries with seismic risk. The joints will behave as fuses that will locally fail and prevent the full collapse of the structure.
