A brief summary of the person's background:

Ioannis Papargyriou received his Diploma in Civil Engineering (5-year course), with an emphasis in Structural Engineering, from the Department of Civil Engineering of Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh), Greece, in July 1999. His dissertation had the topic “Nonlinear finite element modelling and analysis of composite beams” and received the first prize in undergraduate diploma theses competition (2001), organised by the Hellenic Organization for Research on Steel Structures and the National Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A.). In 2001 he received his MSc and the Diploma of Imperial College London in Structural Steel Design. His dissertation focused on the “Ductility assessment of composite beams in moment resisting frames”, under the supervision of Professor A. Elghazouli.

Ioannis has more than 16 years of experience as a structural engineer consultant either as a freelance or as an associate of structural design offices. His expertise is in structural analysis and design mainly of steel and reinforced concrete buildings under earthquake loading. He has participated in the design of a vast range of projects of the private and the public sector, which primarily involved buildings of a wide spectrum of use types, such as residential, commercial, educational, cultural and administration. Moreover, he has experience on the structural assessment and retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete structures and in the “Type 3.2 Certification” of metallic products as per EN10204.

Research field:

His interest in the field of steel structures is extended to seismic force resisting systems of cold-formed steel buildings. The behaviour and design of such structures is challenging, due to the nature of the seismic loading and the inelastic response of the members and the connections.

His research focuses on the structural behaviour and design of cold-formed, strap-braced stud wall building systems under seismic loading.
