Recent activities and achievements

Project title: Rapid Seismic Risk Assessment and Risk Mitigation Strategies for Industrial Facilities in Turkey

Objectives: Improve existing framework of ERA (Earthquake Risk Assessment)

Tasks and methodology:

In this work, the existing rapid seismic risk assessment and management framework for industrial facilities developed by Earthquake Engineering Research Group of University of Sheffield will be extended to cover industrial facilities (automotive factories etc.) in Turkey in a close collaboration with two prominent Turkish institutions, Gebze Technical University and Istanbul Technical University. The likelihood of failure of structures or equipment with physical and functional dependencies by the impact of another structure or equipment during a seismic event will be also taken into consideration (domino/cascading effect). The improved rapid assessment methodology will be calibrated by performing a comprehensive risk assessment on a chosen industrial facility using data mining techniques, data from site visits and existing evaluations.

Expected results:

Design framework of SRA, which can be applied to industrial facilities in Turkey and other developing countries.
